Fierce 2022 will be adding two tournaments with a goal of 10 tournaments or a 30 game schedule. We may add a tourney in San Antonio. If we felt that our team advances to a higher level than we can meet in Austin, we would potentially play up to the Varsity level here in Austin, try San Antonio, or look at a tournament in Houston or Dallas. Houston or Dallas would involve a family survey to determine fit and interest. We recognize it is a great expense for families in time and money and take budget and ROI seriously.
There are visiting teams as well and teams I am not aware of. We would like to make sure we play these teams as much as possible. So if they play up in Varsity, we want to be there.
Girls Basketball Tournaments Overview
75% of these tournaments are what I would call highly competitive to win. This is a tougher schedule than the 2018 schedule. We do have the flexibility to move up a grade in some tournaments in the unlikely event we were to dominate the schedule. We will also look to add a San Antonio or perhaps Houston tournament. The basketball tournament logistics are often disappointing. The complete opposite of an Austin swim meet. We often don’t get game times until Thursday or Friday for a weekend tournament. There are indeed more real obstacles (like being at the mercy of school district facilities and scheduling etc) and there is the laissez-faire attitude of some people running the tournaments. We have aimed to take on the more reliable tournament providers, but there are no guarantees. Having two children of my own, owning a business, etc., my time is valuable too and we will do everything within our power to respect your time at a level not seen in Austin select basketball.
Fierce Girls Select Basketball Practices
Practices are not optional. If you miss practice, you don’t start and playing time is likely reduced. And yes that includes “excused absences.” Absences happen. Illness, injury, family matters, etc. And yes, sometimes the mental health day. Or a parent day (imagine that for a minute.) Your player not starting is not a punishment. It is simply about choices and consequences that they will be experiencing in the Fall at their High School. This is likely the standard at their high school and beyond programs and we want to prepare them for that commitment.
These are tentative dates for practice. We will be surveying all prospects to ensure that attendance is a managable priority.
Team Practice is Tuesday night 7pm – 9pm at Fitzhugh Baptist Church
Skill Practice is 7pm to 8pm on Mondays.
Real Run is Monday Night after Skills 8-9:15. This is optional but recommended.
All practices are at Fitzhugh Baptist Church Gym
Real Run Participation on Mondays
We have a program over at Austin Youth Basketball called the Real Run. It is for middle school girls. It is refereed pickup followed by 30 minutes of structured basketball specific conditioning and speed work. The girls love it, and leave with an intense sweat and a huge smile on their face. This is a real favorite and where they get a chance to try new things, work their butts off while laughing and smiling, and they are not coached. This encourages less robotic play, joy, and lessens the fear of failure. We strongly encourage your players to participate in this, which would get your child to work on their game 3 times a week. This program has increased joy, speed, and IQ because players can no longer blame coaches, parents etc.
This program is not required attendance but it has been added as a bonus.
Girls Select Basketball Tryouts and Invites
Austin Fierce players who played in our Fall Akins League have first priority. You have an invite. You have one week to accept the commitment to the schedule and pay the invoice via PayPal button below (if you have a cash flow issue, call me.) Once we determine who wishes to return, we will announce tryouts for remaining spots. We will need you to attend tryouts but you will be on the team if you are committed. And the prospective players trying out will be made aware of that in the interest of transparency.
Fierce has a waiting list of interested players now, and many are talented. We will have a team this year, unlike some other clubs who will have tryouts and may not be able to form a team. Your coaching staff is set. Your gym is set. Your practice schedule is set, and your tournament schedule is set. Curriculum and philosophy are set. We have a highly talented group of coaches and trainers and parents to support your most valuable asset… your
basketball player child.
Your girls are also invited to attend the next two Wednesdays of Real Run so we can see them play more. Tryouts and the Real Run sessions for next two Wednesdays are complimentary. Please share with your friends.
Austin Select Basketball Fees With Fierce $1299
What This Breaks Down to Per Hour of Basketball:
Your player will have 130 hours of basketball available to them. This breaks down to less than $10 per hour of basketball development. We are highly confident we have put together the best team and curriculum to help your kids reach their basketball goals. We know we could put together a lower price program. Hire a coach with no real experience or experience that does not help your player grow stronger. Someone who did not play at a high level. Maybe someone no longer passionate about the game or developing young people. We know we could have practice once a week and make believe we are all getting better and half our gym costs. We think that is a waste of time and money, so we tried to create a program that delivered results and the best value. We are confident you will see the value.
What Fees Don’t Include:
- Uniforms for new players that don’t have them from previous years. We have Under Armour uniforms, not the practice jerseys we wore in the Akins Fall League. Approx cost is $190 for top quality reversible uniform and a nice warm-up pullover and practice shorts and reversible practice jerseys. We consistently hear that our uniforms are some of the best out there and our players take pride in them. Parents have enjoyed the durability.
- Your travel and hotel expenses if we go out of town.
- Some social events that will either be a potluck or shared expenses. We are not going to Disney World no matter what Ellie says, so these are not big costs.
- Any tailgating expenses so we avoid expensive restaurants with bad food when we see a great opportunity to avoid concession stands and pizza before games.
- Player Insurance $16 per year. We will become an AAU team so we can qualify for coach, club, and player insurance.
- Additional tournaments over 10. There will be votes taken on that. Most will cost between $300 and $500 with coaching expense. Fees would be split between attending players.
Even More Summer Basketball?
If parents decide they want to play tournaments beyond June, we can discuss at that time and that would be an additional small fee. We do not want to hold people up from planning vacations etc and our girls do not need to be in additional college exposure tournaments during July. No coach is recruiting your 14-year-old just yet.. Unless they are 6’5 and dominant. We do have several college prospects, however, and we may want to stick our toe into this madness this year so we can be more accustomed to the pressure next.
In addition to this schedule, we will try to schedule a few scrimmages at Fitzhugh Baptist Church and also try to add a Queen of The Court Event.
The Akins Fall League
We would likely place a team in this Austin girls fall league again. That would be a different fee and we will be taking a poll on that before committing. Depending on the ability of the team at that time, I would be inclined to see if we could play up against the JV division. I think our girls had a huge advantage going into their tryouts and seasons playing against older (and in some cases, faster and stronger girls.)
Training & Camp Opportunities
Austin Youth Basketball holds personalized training groups and also many camps and clinics to help your child to progress. Your child will receive a VIP Code for 20% off during the season for any camps or clinics (at Fitzhugh location only) we hold to encourage their participation. Personalized training is a set fee but we will try to move your child past any waiting list we have depending on the time of year.
